    Default Loggerhead Shrike

Another new species for me at Viera Wetlands last week.
Found a fairly reliable and cooperative pair and it was great watching them hunt from the tops of pine trees.

This was my first outing with the new Canon 2xIII converter and I have to say I was quite impressed even
    with the "old" 500.

Looking forward to your comments and critiques!

Hi Mike, good attentive pose from the shrike, and you have captured a great view of the beak. Overall, the shrike is well exposed and sharp. If anything, I would take a sliver off the top.

Nice capture and composition, Mike. Cool looking bird, like the pose and texture of perch and grasses is nice touch. Like pano, and like Stuarts suggestion as well.

very nice capture of a shrike. I like how you got the eye, usually it is hard to get. Does The 2 III AF?
Thanks for looking at my Photos

Simple and elegant. I might take a sliver off top and RHS. I like the perch and the grasses-makes the picture unique,

With the Canon pro bodies (1D series), you still get AF at f/8 but only at center focus point.
Other Canon bodies lose AF at f/8.

For this image, I focused on the eye using center point and then recomposed.
Since I was not concerned about suddenly needing to track action, I just used One Shot AF to do this.

Thanks to all for the comments!

Just wanted to point out that the "grasses" are actually pine needles ... bird was perched at the top of a pine tree looking for prey.

Great shot. I really like the perch and the grass around it. Great pose and flash work.
    Well done.
