Default Look what I found (2)

    Attached Images Attached Images

    Canon 1D4, 500mm + 1.4x
1/500, f7.1, iso 800, flash in manual mode

From past summer, when I figured out how to approach these otherwise nervous birds.

I underexposed ambient a bit to get deeper/warmer bg and used flash to make the bird stand out.
Wish there was just a bit more separation between the worm and the leg. (Actually I do have another frame with that desired separation, but it doesn't have the down this barrel look :( )
I thought of removing the highlights on the leg, but skipped it for some reason.

    All feedback appreciated.
    Thanks

Very nice, Sidharth, like the low angle, head-on pose, and worm is a great touch. Great BG and dof works well. Just wish for a little more distinction of bill, but may not be possible.

Excellent shot, I really like the angle the image is taken from, one messy little fella isn't he?

I really like this image. I like the BG and the bit of flash looks good. Worm is great as is the direct gaze. Really like the muddy legs,

I like the low angle this is shot from. I like the color transition in the bg and the action between the bird and the worm. The worm looks like it is literally holding on for dear life.

Hi Sid, great head on capture, and you lined the angle up perfectly. Love the 'stretched' worm, muddy legs, and the bird is tack sharp where it counts. Killer BG, although I would take a touch off the top. Did you shoot this vertical? Cheers.

Thank you all. Appreciate the feedback.
Stu, if I remember right, this is cropped from the sides from an original horizontal. I'll confirm when I get home.

What a lovely shot, Looks like you managed to get even lower than the bird's eye level Sid. I love the way you used the flash and still didnt get a harsh shadow of the worm on the bird's chest.

If you dont mind sharing, Which Flash do you use ? what were your camera settings for the flash and Flash setting it self?

Hi Amol, thanks for stopping by and for the kind words.
I use the Canon 580EXII (typically with a better beamer, but I don't think I did in this case)

I don't think the complete flash settings are saved in the EXIF data, so I'll be guessing here.
I'm quite sure that I used the flash in the manual mode, 50ft. I'm guessing the power was at 1/16th.

I metered the scene, under exposed in the camera just a bit to darken the bg and lightly added some fill flash.
Here's an example of a similar approach where I used the flash in e-ttl mode instead.
In all honesty, I don't get to use the flash too often, and when I do, I take a couple shots, check the results and adjust as necessary.
    Experimenting is always fun.

What an awesome image. Love the low angle and the head on pose. I would also take a bit off from the top. Congratulations.

Wow, a great image. Lovely BG. The food in the beak to made the image to something extra. I would have taken a bit of the top of the image. But it was a great image
