While I like the action in this pic of two herons trying for the same piece of fish, I am unhappy with the lack of sharpness and the washed out originial version. What could I have done to improve it? To get it sharper especially?

I would have thought that f10 would have gotten everything in focus. I did a lot of contrasting and regular amount of sharpening in PS. I also toned down the water a bit and added saturation.

I did try a tighter vertical cropping. But then the second bird's head seemed to come out of nowhere. So I put its body back in. lol

    Thanks for any advice!

Where was the focus point on this....It looks to me that the focus was on the shoulders.

Agree with William That area seems to be the sharpest? Not an easy one to get right You don't have much of a chance to recompose so moving the AF point to the desired area is about the only chance !!!

Exposure wise is also tough Got sun and shadows Not a good thing Would have tried a lower angle to improve the bg You did catch some nice action !!!!

Yes, I'm sure I hit the shoulder with the focus point, thinking if I used f/10 and focused a bit toward the middle, that the whole thing would be in focus. nope. As soon as I saw what was happening, I knew I should have been lower, but my the time my ol' knees got on the ground, these two were gone. lol. I really need to work on being faster on changing my camera settings as well as moving to where the best angle is.
