Not my best raptor image (in fact there are many things wrong here), but thought I'd add something to the motif that would raise some eyebrows ito high ISO performance. I too was surprised by this one. We headed out in pre-dawn light one morning in the Kalahari, and came across a juvenile Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk sitting in a tree by the road. I had to shoot up through the sunroof to get this, and luckily he eyeballed me. As I normally operate on auto-ISO with the D3s, I gave no second thought about the setting as long as I could maintain my chosen aperture/SS combination.
Techs:
Nikon D3s with Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
f4.0 @ 1/400 SS @ ISO-12800
NR done on BG only, NOT on the bird
and yes I know there's an OOF clump of thorn bush in front of his feet![]()
