Hi, yeah, I know, haven't posted much lately..........

This is from a 2009 (the year I bought my first serious DSLRs 40D/5D2) Workshop I did with Jack Graham in the Eastern Sierras.

I still remember how cold it was that morning!

    Camera: 5D2
    Capture date/time: 7 Oct 2009;
    Light condition: sun rise
    Lens: 70-200 f/2.8
    Focal length: 85mm
    Distance:
    Extender: none
    Tube: none
    Flash/Comp: no;
    ISO: 200
    Exp Prog: Av
    Speed: 1/50
    Aperture: f/32
    Exp Comp: 0
    Metering: Evaluative
    WB: Auto
    AF Drive: single shot
    Tripod: yes
    Filter: SR GNDs
Crop: slice off of the bottom
Image Changes: removed what I didn't want

Processed in LR3, CS5, Nik and Pixel Genius Sharpening, Tony Kuyper Actions.

After cleanup, sharpening, noise reduction, I ran a TK Smart Glow action to POP the colors, toned it down slightly with Curves, pretty good burn on the hot sun and reflection to dull the extreme brightness, and then using PK Selective Sharpener brought up the reflections and glassy look on the water.

What more or less would you do? Thanks!

    All C&Cs gratefully appreciated!
    Cheers, Jay

I like the layers here and the mist rising from the water with the warm tones, it creates a nice mood.
I immediately thought that I wanted more detail on the rocks but the more I look at it the more it works for me as posted...

    Hey Jay,
Haven't been around myself a lot lately. I like parts of this.....the flare....the mist....even the silhouettes......except for the largest one because it intersects and merges with the BG. I know that you have been going out and doing more landscapes....so look for seperation like you have on the left. If you had combined that with the sunburst.....it would have been much stronger. Colors are pretty subdued by your standards . Hope you are well my friend!

Mate, thanks for asking; the drugs are miraculous!! Able to climb stairs in a single leap , and 40lbs lighter than when this nightmare started!!

Understand what you mean by the separation; perhaps a little cloning would create that separation though even for me that would be too much interpretation!!

This is probably one of the first landscapes I ever seriously shot on that workshop; today, we look at all the edges and corners before pressing the shutter. Do not like elements protruding into the frame. Here, on the left, the first tufa was chopped a bit on the left side base to create separation between the edge and the tufa.

Thanks for the advice; miss you being around though MorkMan is working very hard to fill big shoes and doing it well; Robert has always worked hard to teach us all about landscape photography!!

Going to have to drop you a line Jay! Wil be out in SF in Sept. speaking at the PSA conference. I know you've been working....and glad to see the health has been so good! I've got to work on the lbs. myself.
Morkel is doing a fine job here.....have to try and drop by a bit more often!

    Jay,

I would agree with the separation comments on the right rock. That is what draws my eye in too much and that is not the affect you want.

Totally agree with the need for the separation - hopefully wouldn't happen today. I have been playing with ways to shorten the tufa with the clone tool; a lot of work to make it look right and that is probably to much of an "Interpretation" for me. It is more than removing an offending "something".

How do you feel about the sunburst being so large?
    Cheers, Jay

Hi Jay, I like this image as is. I would have preferred the cool looking sunburst to be a little more away from the edge of the frame, but this comp works for me as it is too. Nice capture!
