    Default Cheerful Snow Bunting

For a species that is mostly found in cold temperatures and winter climates it sure does look happy :-) I was happy too that it decided to land on this "perch". Instead of spreading out the seeds along the bottom of the snow bank I concentrated them in one small pile directly below this snow/ice clump...with the large number of individuals coming in to feed I knew it was only a matter of time before one of them would use this perch to wait for its turn at the seed pile.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/4000s., f/6.3, ISO 400 (settings histogram checked), natural light, handheld, car as blind, 75% FF. A bit of dark debris patched out of the perch. Darkened the pupil and lightened the iris.

I really like the composition. I usually find them feeding on the ground or on the electrical wires, and nothing like this. They are **** skittish too. It's really great that you caught it with an opened bill. The whites on the bird is perfect and not blown out. Nice catchlight and head angle.

Very nice shot Daniel. I can't find anything wrong with this and I like the pose and love Snow Buntings. Not too many around my area this year.

This checks all my boxes and then some.
Pose, bg, "perch", exposure, comp and especially those claws. A perfect image.

You nailed the whites Daniel! Love the perch and pose but what really makes this image for me are the feet and nails in the snow. Head police will love the HA!

I wasn't going to say this because no one else has commented but I find the head just a bit soft and would do a bit of selective sharpening. If it is me, I apologize ( I lost my trifocals in Florida last week and am using a pair of dollar store glasses right now!!)

Nice pose and details and the perche couldn't have been better, Daniel. I'm not crazy about the open beak but other than that the picture is great.

I'm really impressed (but not surprised!) by your excellent exposure. Just love his perch and the look back pose. Great job yet again, Daniel.

Hi Dan, I really like the light in this, together with the pose, HA, and snow perch. ( did you create the perch?) Great detail on the Bunting, and just love the soft winter colours of the BG. I like this lots.

    Thanks all!!

Stuart, no I did not create the perch. I was slowly driving along scouting for little natutally formed "perches" like this and when I saw that little formation atop the snowbank I knew I wanted to use it.

I somehow missed this post - very nice Daniel best snow in the business. I like the back talons - they seem very long. I like the look back pose with the open beak.
