Default Dainty Early Morning Light Liftoff

This Great Egret taking flight image was created at Little Estero Lagoon on the still-in-progress SW FLA IPT with the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens, the 1.4X III TC, and the EOS-1D MIV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1 stop off the sky: 1/2500 sec. at f/4 set manually. (Baited with fresh-caught greenbacks.)

BPN's Randy Stout (Avian) is co-leading and Peter Kes (Photography Gear) is helping out as well. Denise Ippolito (Out-of-the-Box) was here for a bit but headed north to do some programs in Sarasota. We are having great fun. I have an assistant/apprentice for the first time ever; read the whole story and check out Tim Kaufman's killer image here.

Love the wings out and feet almost out in this graceful liftoff, Artie! Wonderful light and reflection.

Love the capture, light and reflection - A good composition that captures an interesting reflection is always a personal favorite.

Hi Artie, lovely light, and well timed for the take off. Goog wing position, nice and sharp, and wondering how this would look in a horizontal crop.

Thanks all. This is from a vertical capture so there is room only for a near-square at best.

Nice catch, very well timed. Yes, a horizontal crop may have to be square to keep gthe reflection in frame IMO.

I understand Artie. From a vertical you aint going to create much of a horizontal.

For this type of image my personal choice is a horizontal frame where you leave room on the left for the subject to go...

Thanks Dave. Good thought but for the obvious sharp line where you added canvas left. Recreating water with small wavelets is impossible as far as I am concerned. I have lots of similar horizontals and wanted to tackle the challenge of trying to create some potential cover art. You can see another vertical from the same morning here.

Hi Art, maybe my eyes are playing tricks but I don't see an obvious line in front of the bird. I do see a few repeats but I did it in around 5 minutes ( patching a few areas that were obvious)using content aware. I was using it more as a compositional example than a photoshop lesson. That tool sometimes works great and other times pulls in the wrong material. After awhile one gets a feel for what will work.
I wasn't aware you were looking at cover art usage. In that case you were locked into that particular format and I can understand it's use.

Very nice image. Like a ballerina this bird is full of grace. Nicely exposed highlights and plenty sharp.
