I could sympathise with this sandpiper's hunched up appearance and depressed expression - it was absolutely freezing! A few of these birds overwinter along our coasts here in the UK. They usually prove to be fairly approachable, unless there are birds like Redshank nearby which spook very easily. This one had the beach to himself and was roosting on some rather attractive pilings in the weak winter sun.

    Hi Melvin,
I like the capture, but the subject is too centered in the frame for my taste. I took the liberty to enhance you image by cropping just a wee bit on the left side of the frame, increased the contrast just a tad, gave you just a sprinkle of saturation and a little bit of sharpening...What do you think? Oh yes, the small little twig near the Pipers tail that sticks up in the air can be cloned out; which I did not do...

I like the crop that Gus did. This guy certainly gives me the feel of the environment.....cold and lonely. I like the sharpness and detail with this one.......and the overall setting. Well done.

Thanks Gus for the comments and the work you have done. Obviously cropping is very personal and, quite honestly, I prefer mine however I accept your point. I was a little reticent in increasing the contrast as I was afraid it might make the subject look oversharpened when it was reduced and converted for the forum, however, when making a 'proper print' from the original I would probably end up with a result much more like your repost. Thanks again for your work - it's what makes this forum great.
