Came to visit our backyard today. Sorry I couldn't get it in the traditional pose, but that's ok....it's my first one.
Cloudy, very overcast day, so light was difficult to work with. slight curves and high pass. cropped out some of the tree.

a handsome bird, the image is quite soft and noisy and the tree trunk in the FG is distracting.

Arash covered everything Hazel. These birds will gladly come to suet. When they have young to raise they will come to birdseed and will bring the little ones when they are old enough. They quickly grow tolerant of your presence and allow you to photograph at close range.

I was only about 20 feet away. Used a Tamron 70-300 mm lens. Set on manual focus. Do you think it was the overcast day that make it soft? I'll post the original to let you see the crop.

Hazel, I can see oof limbs between you and the bird, that definately had an impact. Also the large crop and 1/100 ss probably helped too.

the bird is obviously blocked by those branches and also the manual focus will not give you sharp results unless you use live view with very careful focusing, if you want sharp photos you need to use AF.

Nice female Red-bellied Woodpecker. I think the softness is due in part to the slow shutter speed.
