    Default Whooping Cranes in Louisiana

Recently I had the privilege of going to the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area in my home state of Louisiana. They are doing very difficult but very inspiring work trying to restore a 3rd wild population in the US of whooping cranes. Hard to believe that there are only 400 of these magnificent birds in the wild worldwide.

I had my camera with me, and was able to get some shots with the rising sun at my back. Because of the sensitivity for the birds, we had to keep quite a distance. I was shooting a Canon 7D, 500mm f/4 L IS USM and a 1.4x III on a tripod. 1/1250s f/6.3 ISO 400 are the specs

There were the typical challenges of the early morning light...birds were feeding behind some Roseau canes in a bit of a shadow and then would take off and be illuminated by the rising sun. I also put together a 5 minute slide video on my own to really help educate folks on their efforts..I am not affiliated in anyway with this effort...Just an inspired individual that prays for their success. If interested, you can click the link below...Its 720 HD and can be watched full screen. and if you have a bandwidth problem, you can cursor over the 720p HD and an option for 360p will come up that is better for slow bandwidths.

I would just like to see one, let alone photograph them.
Thanks for sharing this. Fantastic birds, still in dire need of conservation.

Many thanks Dan..it was a special opportunity and the birds as they have matured are spectacular....particularly when they are soaring as a group. Not sure if you tried to play the slide video...I have had numerous requests for copies of one to the photos where there is a group flying like the Blue Angels....

Well done Steve. Very nice video and quite informative with some excellent photos. I grew up in Alberta in the '50's and remember the concern when their numbers were in the 20's. Nice to see that lots of hard work is paying off.
