Peter this is beautiful image and the. BG oof cormorant distracts may be shooting from little off to current might help.
as the quality is good you can try opening up shads a bit .

That particular shot is the only one I got of them fighting over that leaf, unfortunately. I agree it would have been better without the OOF bird in the background. I don't use the full Photoshop (I use Lightroom) - not sure what the best way would be to eliminate or at least de-emphasize that bird in the background. Perhaps within Lightroom I can use the paintbrush to decrease the exposure and clarity of that area to take some of the emphasis away. The shadows adjustment on the foreground birds shouldn't be difficult - I was shooting towards the middle of the day so the original was too bright, and I adjusted the blacks slider upward in lightroom. There should be plenty of room to bring up some shadows if I decide to re-process it.
