    Default Pel's Fishing Owl

    Attached Images Attached Images

Whilst on a night time drive and on the trail of a mating leopard pair, we came upon this rarely seen Pel's Fishing Owl
perched high on the bank of the Luangwa River, these guys are a privilege to see and this hand held spot lit image from our vehicle (NO flash)
seemed appropriate to it's nocturnal habitat.
Pel's aren't that rare, just rarely sighted, but the Sth Luangwa is an area where you stand a better chance to see them than just about anywhere else in Africa.

D3s 500VR 1/15s f/4 ISO1600 -2 EV comp, a steady hand and large bean bag. Sth Luangwa NP- Zambia Nov 2011

    C & C most welcome

    Cheers
    Marc

Thanks Troy, the room above is there for a reason. I should have stated that initially.

excellent details, good flash exposure I wish there was a little bit of texture in the BG and the eye looks flashed, should be an easy fix

    Thanks Arash

As the owl was perched high on the riverbank, there was nothing close to the BG other than the river bank many hundreds of metres/yards on the other side.
Also as stated in my posting description, NO flash was used. Lighting was via a hand held vehicle spot light and minus EV exp only.
As far as I'm aware, it's impossible for any eye/retina not to have some sort of reflected light when a light source is shone in its direction,
if I had removed the catchlight from the eyes, it would have looked quite odd indeed.

I think the flash look comes from the blue fringe in the pupil, I'd remove that and make the pupil a bit darker without removing the catchlight :)

MArc, very good exposure...terrific sharpness for the SS and nice look back. agree with Arash's suggestion of some eye work.
