Default Disabling buttons on back of camera

As I walk around with my camera on a strap the buttons rub against me and activate. I thought that I read something from Artie saying that they could be disabled but have not been able to find it again. Is it possible to disable and if so, on the Canon 40D?

The only thing I know of that can be disabled is the Quick Control Dial (large wheel on back of camera).
This is done by turning the Power switch only one click to "On" instead of two clicks to the line that points to the dial.

Thanks, I am either mistaken or misunderstood what I read.
