Morkel,
I thought I had commented on this earlier, perhaps I pressed the wrong button
Oryx are for me at least a very difficult animal to capture a decent image of, especially when the light is harsh, which it often is in their normal habitat.
The colour of their main body never seems to come out accurately and this seems to be the case here, as it seems to have a magenta cast and is not the light brown it should be.
I had the same problems in Kgalagadi last year the angle of the sun there is generally awkward

Thanks for your comments, Ken. I do not see any magenta on their bodies, and did not this morning when I posted from my recently calibrated monitor at home. Will see what others say regarding this and have a look again this afternoon when I get home.
They do have a tendency to strike good poses in crap light, don't they?
I think the one of the only Gemsbok images I ever posted on here which was in decent light was this one:

Cool image Morkel.
Like the jousting/sparing/clash of the heads between the two, with the dust being churned up in all the comotion. Colour looks natural, even in harsh light, can't see any magenta cast???

Try looking at the back of the right hand Oryx and then compare it to those shown in Morkel's link.

In all fairness, I have found that Gemsbok coats are very much influenced by the light. Golden brown in sweet light, bland grey in overcast or harsh light...not to even mention the colour variations between individuals...
:)
Like I said, will have a look again tonight.

Morkel,
I think that is what I meant in my original comment, I once asked one of the best Wildlife photographers in the world to get a good image of an Oryx, as far as I am aware he failed

Morkel - nice action and the dust adds to the feeling. Light does look harsh but well handled. I'm not seeing a magenta cast either and when checking values with ColorPic, they don't look out of line (reds are higher but I would expect that in browns).

Rachel

Morkel,
Looks like you had to deal with some harsh light conditions. YOu did an excellent job and action makes this image for me.

Love the duelling pose on this pair Morkel, would have loved to see this in better light.

I like the dust cloud and the vertical lining up of the horns. Tough to get great shots of sparring animals since they rarely want to give us that nice profile view. Fun to watch though, even if we don't get that shot we want.
