I took this photo last week; it was a hazy morning. I believe the bird is a grackle, but I don't know which one. It is the only image I got of it, and though there may be many negatives (bulrush stalk in front, etc.), I am attracted to the image (cocked head, etc.). I'd appreciate any and all criticism you might offer. I'm particularly interested to know if noise is a problem and if the bird's softness detracts. By the way, I plan to go back and try getting a better one soon.

I like this Wendell. The birds face is a little soft but I like the the diagonals of the stems and the colors.

I like to see birds in natural habitat so the grasses do not disturb me at all. The head looks rather soft, was there perhaps a blade of grass or seeds in front and way OOF? Possibly you focussed on the wing? It may be worthwhile trying extra sharpening on the head.

    Hi wendell,
You gave yourself a good self critique! Face is too soft for me,
    Gail

No, Jonathan, no "grass or seeds in front and way OOF"" -- I didn't do any cloning on the image. Looks like I did focus on the wing. I will give the head a little extra sharpening. I will try a higher SS next time, too. Thanks for your input.

I like the HA and the enviroment the grass that has blocked the bird is distracting and the grackle itself is soft perhaps from slow SS?

There is so much I like about this photo (the soft colors and the way the vegetation's colors compliment those of the grackle and the overall "feel" which I would describe as gentle and warm) but yes, I do find the softness a little distracting, and I would prefer to not have the stalk intersecting the lovely bird. But as you say, you'll be back at it for some more grackle & stalk action...being familiar with that lens combo, I would agree with Arash: 1/640 is a little on the slow side for handholding that lens at 400mm, even with the VR...
