    Default Sparrow on moss

This is a setup. Nikon D700, 300mm f2.8, 1.4tc, tripod. 1/500, f7.1, iso640. Adjusted wb, exp, sat in acr. Cloned away some stump obstructions and usm in cs3. This is about 80% of the original. Very cloudy here this morning.

Nice exposure, DOF, and body position. Not my favorite crop, too much empty space up top...do you have any more room on the sides???

Thanks James. I wish I had more room on the sides, this was a vertical and I only cropped a little from the top.

Beautiful colours and details, fine pose and a great background. Maybe crop 4:3 and place the bird a little lower in the frame?
I like the log, but I'm sorry to say I don't think the leaves add, in fact to be honest they detract, it looks rather too staged to me. (bet I am wrong now I said that)

Hi Jack, I already started working on this before I saw your reply. You could always add a little canvas if you do that sort of thing...This is what I had in mind for an alternate crop.

The bird and BG are beautiful, but I find the leaves highly distracting.

Your repost looks real good James, nice work. As for the leaves, I sometimes add too many elements to these setups. Sometime I like a lot of different color but I certainley appreciate all honest critiques.

Love the red on green and the birds pose. Sweet log, but feel a smaller leaf or vine would work better.

Real nice setup with excellent perch Jack. James's repost takes it to next level. Horizantal crop makes it even more attractive IMO.

I love the stump and the horizontal repost. Leaves look a little extraneous to my eye.

Everything is good except the vine leaves and would take a bit off the top,

I think you had a great idea in mind with this setup.
The leaves are just a bit large, still an excellent photo, the IQ and light is superb.
    Well done.

Original and repost are great. I do find the leaves a bit overpowering. Very nice and sharp all around. Good light too.

Hi Jack, great sharp detail on the sparrow, and good DOF. Colours look spot on too. Good BG, and maybe leaving the leaves out will create a better overall setting. I do like what James has done.

Nice image Jack! I like the bird, mossy perch and BG. I would consider taking different variations when you are doing these setup. Some without the plant then maybe add a dead leaf and so on. Later you will have more to pick from. Your setups are improved over last years.
