Default EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

Really like the price of the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM and was wondering how it performs with 1/4x and 2x?

2x...I would stay away from because that'll put you at F8 and most likely autofocus.

1.4x...I tried it once. If my old mind remembers correctly (this was a few years ago),
the autofocus was real slow (I'm using a Canon 1D Mark II).

it performs poorly plus with a non-1D body you lose AF with either TC.
