Another from my sighting of the lion eating the impala leg in the Timbavati Game Reserve, South Africa. I like this because of the angled head and the way the lion has raised the impala leg but realize the tightness may not be everyone's choice.

    Canon 50D
    100-400 @ 400mm
    1/320
    f5.6
    ISO 200
HH from safari vehicle, s/h, levels and curves adjustments, sharpened in CS5, cropped slightly to remove a stray leaf from the top.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

I like the tight portrait here and the way everything is tilted. He looks content.

I like the side lighting here Rachel. I also like the visible claw in the LLC. I think the highlighted hairs above the lion's right eye are a nice touch. Big teeth, eh?

Thanks Steve and Andrew. Yes, big teeth and I think the lower left one is broken.

    Rachel,

The tightness of the crop does not bother me as much on this, as it is a behavoural image rather than portrait. The angle of his head is what counts her and the intent look

The colour & contrast look a little flat to me Rachel, would have like to have seen a little more of his paws, one claw showing is a nice touch.

I'd like to see it with the light from the reverse side, coming from the right. That would put the emphasis on the impala leg (which is now in shadow).

Hi Rachel, the facial expression, poise, and angle of both head and bone convey the scene very well, especially with that one eye almost closed, he is certainly enjoying his feast and tucking in.

I would look at the whites on the chin, as they do look blown, so a quick visit back to the RAW may recover some of this area. Also I feel adding some mid tone into the face would help too, but ensure you do not lose any more detail in the mouth & nose. As presented I might be tempted just to shave a little off the top, by dropping the whole crop down would lose the slight highlight in the top LHC and would have allowed more of that paw/claws to be more visible. PP is getting really good now. Also take out the two white spots on the bone?

Thanks Ken, Marc, Tom and Steve. One of the reasons I went tight in camera was the strong light coming from the left, the strongest highlights on wider shots were at the lower left on the impala leg and lion's paw so I cropped in camera to get rid of that on this shot. Will look at the chin, contrast and 2 white spots (though I think they are saliva).

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel, I assumed it was saliva, but when viewed at this size sometimes I 'personally feel' it is easier to remove them than keep them in, purely as your eyes pick up on them. When viewed much larger or as in prints things are a lot move obvious and your eyes register them better I feel.

why don't they ever position themselves in the perfect orientation for the light? you would think that by now they would mind our photographic needs?
I do feel you handled this well, Rachel...and the PP is looking good. Some good suggestions given above already...
I think that working up a bit more shadow detail and then countering with some midtone contrast will add a bit of punch!

If they did then we would not need to back again and again, and that would be no fun

Thanks guys. Here's a repost with a bit more punch. Morkel and Ken - at least for you it's not a 16+ hour flight to get more shots.
