    Default Rimlight

I was in Scotland and Northtumberland last Summer and we had some very bad rain. But after the rain showers there was beautiful sunlight and dark sky, which made a fantastic light.

I tried different shutter speed to create blurred or "frozen" images.
This one is made with 1/1000 sec / f 10 and ISO 320

Tried a tighter crop, but I like the light green leaves in the lower right corner and did not want to take canvas from the left.
When I look at your previous comments to my other pictures, I think I always tend to avoid very tight composings. I think I like to see some of the birds environment.
But I want to learn to become a better photographer and I hope to get a better feeling fo the right cropping.

    So C&C much appreciated
    Thanks & Love,
    Rosl

    Rosl,
Very nice image, I love it. I would suggest in off centering your subject. He is smack dead center in the frame... Try cropping a bit from the right, and see how it looks to you.

    All the best...

    Hi Rosi!

I really like the rim light effect, and the bird is beautiful with outstretched wings, and landing gear down. The fish is a nice touch. My suggestion is that the really bright square on the lower right seems to be drawing a lot of my attention, and the shape also does not seem to fit the image. The background is really nice, and with the flowers, I think it adds to the environment.

I like this one as it has a nice "sense of place" with it. A wonderful catch with the bird and fish. I might want it less centered but I'm like you.....I wouldn't want to lose the greenery in the right corner. Is there any space in the original on the left that might allow you to keep the bird out of the center? Also, I agree about the light area on the one rock......I'd probably tone it down. This one is very well done.

Hi Rosl I find these images harder to work than conventional bird with clean bg !!!

This works very well for me and love how you are experimenting with different shutter speeds and apertures Does make a difference in feel dept !!!
Can add to the other comments that using fill flash would have made a difference Not enough to look "flashed" but just for a gentle fill Would like seeing the body lighter!!! Excellent !!!

Love the shot - and had the same feelings about the possible crop. How about isolating and flipping the bird, and then cropping from the right?

This is a beautiful, moody image.

The more centered composition is stronger, IMO, than the ROT. Centered is actually the strongest composition an image can have provided a few conditions are met (strong enough subject, leading lines, etc) and I think with the bird it is strong enough to pull off the centered placement. If anything, I'd rather see the bird higher in the frame than moved left or right.
