    Default Booted Racket-tail

I'm just back from a fantastic Glenn Bartley photo trip to Ecuador (feel free to PM me about the trip if you want info). This entertaining species was common in the Tandayapa area, a few bumpy hours northwest of Quito. For a northern guy, the hummingbird species diversity and abundance there was an eye-opener. Sometimes there were literally hundreds of hummers visible at any given point in time around the four or five feeders. The biggest challenge was to find one to focus on and maintain concentration. This shot was made at a multi-flash setup engineered by Glenn.

I have quite a few similar shots and chose to process this one first. I'm not sure which is best - one with the beak into the flower or one just as the bird approaches the flower. Thoughts? After a month of no Photoshopping I feel quite rusty and am not sure I have done this one justice. All C&C welcome and appreciated.

Multi-flash setup. Canon Mark IV, 500mm f/4L, ISO:400, f/8@1/250, Manual, One Shot AF, evaluative metering, Gitzo 3530LS, leveling head, Jobu HD2 gimbal

Wow that was a beautiful picture. I would have taken some of the top and left out. Then the bird had not been at the center of the image.
But by all means it was a beautiful picture. well done. Just so you know, I'm not jealous of this picture

Ooooh aaahhh. What a beautiful bird. The pose and IQ are great. I have a completely different preference for a crop than Geir does as I would crop from the bottom and take some off the LHS! However, this is just a matter of personal taste. I think you should post the other image tomorrow and we can tell you our favorite,,

A real beauty Dan! I like the sharpness, flower and clean BG. Have you considered a pano crop?

Great flash work, excellent pose, nice background and a beauty bird.
Did you have to have your own set of flash unit or used Glenn's?

This is superb ,Dan. Good comments re crop. Pano crop could work.Personally I would prefer a shot with the beak close to but not inside the flower. Looking forward to your other frames.

Hi Dan, excellent use of flash, and I like the iridescence on the HB. The detail from the multiple flashwork is really sharp. Great BG too.

This si brilliant. the plane of the bird is perfect bringing the tail in focus too. Also the flash has frozen this fellow stunningly.

Good job. Looks like the flash did the trick. They're hard to get in flight because of constant movement. What's really cool is their feet are completely white to go with their "boots".
