Just got back from a great Southern Oceans voyage: the Falklands, South Georgia, and Antarctica. This image was created with the hand held Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS II lens, the 1.4X III TC, and the EOS-5D MII. Evaluative metering -1/3 stop: 1/1250 sec. at f/7.1 in Av Mode.

I'm not quite sure what 'spy hopping' means, but you have given us a wonderful view of the molluscs (?) dotted over the whales' heads and the water swirling around the rhs head is very nice. Are the lighter patches in the water whale fins? Hard to see. I like the simple design of the image.

Beautiful and interesting composition, Artie. Like the rich blue and texture of water, shape and position of whales, and circular sweep of foam.

Thanks Hilary, From Wikipedia: When spyhopping, the whale rises and holds position partially out of the water, often exposing its entire rostrum and head, and is visually akin to a human treading water. Spyhopping is controlled and slow, and can last for minutes at a time if the whale is sufficiently inquisitive about whatever (or whomever) it is viewing.Generally, the whale does not appear to swim to maintain its "elevated" position while spyhopping, instead relying on exceptional buoyancy control and positioning with pectoral fins. Typically the whale's eyes will be slightly above or below the surface of the water, enabling it to see whatever is nearby on the surface.

And yes, those are the huge flippers.

Thanks for the explanation Artie, I find those flippers extraordinary. Love the variety that comes back from the Antarctic.

YAW Hil. I agree on the variety of subjects down there. I have been posing an image a day in each of four BPN Forums each day: Avian, Wildlife, Landscapes, and OOTB and will continue to do so until I run out of one of the categories.

Hi Artie - I too like the blue tones here and the barnacles. I was fortunate to see this behavior in Alaska and curious if you got any with the baleen visible?

Hi Rache, I missed the bulk of the humpback action by being un-prepared and too stubborn :(. I could not find my Black Rapid strap and missed 15 great minutes..... So no baleen images.

Too bad Artie, but I'm sure you still got plenty of keepers!

Looks like 2 mountain peaks shooting out of the seas - nice one Artie!
I love their textures. I've never photographed wales before and need to make a plan!
