Male bunting made at Okeeheelee Nature Center in Palm Beach. Backgrounds are very busy at this location. Mostly the birds feed on the ground, but occasionally they do a quick stop on a branch. 40D with 500 and 1.4 converter.

Nice pose and nice colors on the bird. It feels over flashed to me and the feathers have an almost plastic look to them.

Depending on how far the BG is from the bird, you could dial in a combination of compensation (don't know the canon solution, but for Nikon, + 1 on the flash and -1 on the body is a good start) to have the BG come out darker and less distracting.

Unless the clock on your camera is off, this was taken after dark though, so that solution might not work.

Hi Susan, nice composition, but the bird looks a wee bit too saturated for my taste, and perhaps a little to over-sharpened...:D Thats the plastic look that Jim is telling you about...

Thanks for your input. I lowered the sat and sharpening. Actually,my data was incorrect. I used no teleconverter. There was, however, flash set at -1 2/3. Also time was AM not PM.
I would wish for a green not a brown BG, something a little more gentle like RJ's

    That's getting better.

You might want to reset your clock (if you care) it is set to 24 hr time and shows 21:06:26 for the time.

    Hi Susan,

Second post works best. You have a lot of noise all around the image. The BG is very distracting and the perch is almost touching the bird's face.

    Keep trying!!
