    Default Orca/Killer Whale

    Attached Images Attached Images

Just got back from a great Southern Oceans voyage: the Falklands, South Georgia, and Antarctica. This image was created with the hand held Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens (hand held at 98mm) with the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1 stop: 1/500 sec. at f/4 in Av Mode.

This is a Gerlach Strait eco-type Killer Whale or Orca. In the Southern Ocean this species is light grey where you would expect it to be black.

Artie - welcome back. The water color and the slight twist in the whale really make this shot for me.

Hi Artie, superb image, love the colours and clarity. The water spray adds interest. I would have loved the tail included but close-up adds alot of impact. Thanks for always helping with latest processing, just got technics. I just started using Nik Color Efex pro and love it TFS

    Hi Artie and welcome back!
I want to see the tail!! The water is so crystal clear. It took a while for me to figure out the image with the reflection of the fin. I really like the water spray and the bubbles and the fact that the water is so clear you can see the underwater fin. I also like the v shaped bow wave in front of the whale's head.Nice curve in the body makes for nice lines. I just wish this was a full body shot,

Thanks Gail. I love the framing as presented as oftentimes tighter framing (as here) yields a far more powerful image than you would get zooming out. Going wider would have minimized the tension and drama and lessened the impact.... I will be entering this one in the BBC contest this year.

IAC, here is one with a tail for you. BTW, they rarely lift the tail out of the water and that only when diving. At least in my limited experience. BTW, we had 60 of them around the boat. Some of them were acting as if the big ship was a bathtub toy!

    See you soon in FLA!

Hi Artie, I have viewed this several times and did also think about the tail, however, perhaps that is just too obvious and we need to break the rules in order to add another dimension to our images and how we present our animals/subjects in moving the progression forward. I like the 'graphic' part the bow wave makes under the water, the spray being jettisoned and the slight curvature of the body. I just wonder what a slow shutter might have made of this image too? Am I right in assuming the focus point is on or around the dorsal fin?

BTW Loved the landscape with the Ice bergs.

Ditto Denise. I really like it as presented, and I think you picked the best spot to crop b/c this comp really works. Love the water spray, the shape of the whale and all the water movement.

I am afraid this one doesn't work for me. The clipped tail, shooting angle, and overall effect is not great IMO. I can't see how shooting from a boat pointing the camera down at the subject can deliver really good photos. It is similar to shooting birds and pointing the camera up to the sky....

The OP with its wild spray, the dramatic turning and churning, and especially the thrust turbulence in the water in front of the head make it work for me.

The second post is also good, but to my eye, more of a 'textbook' shot to depict the whole creature.

Hi Arthur, now that is a killer, Killer Whale image. I think it has huge potential. I love it! No need for the tail, I think the wake details anchor that side of the frame perfectly.

Nice one here Artie! I fully agree with Bill and think that most people trying to shoot orca would get something akin to your second image. The real crazy ones out there will get a water-level shot floating in a zodiac in front of the whale, and shortly after that will end up being mauled .

The motion and power conveyed here is cool!

Thanks Mork. Just for the record, there are zero records of orcas attacking humans in the wild.
