    Another nice portrait Joel. You're becoming a woodpecker expert! Super BG and good detail in the blacks and whites. A little head turn CW would have been optimal.

    Joel,

    Good one, I might opt for less perch, a general rule for this type of composition is 1/3 sky, 1/3 bird and 1/3 perch. Overall another strong picture, beautoful subject with muted background - well done.

    Great shot Joel. Downy woodpeckers are challenging to photograph anywhere but a suet cake or a feeder. I think if the head was turned slightly toward the camera, you would miss the read patch on the head. If the head was turned away from the camera, it might be less satisfying because you would not see the eye as well. What you have looks great.
