This Lioness is enjoying a final bite at sunset, judging by the smell the kill had been made earlier that day. We found her and her siblings by the traditional method of Vulture spotting, the siblings ran off and hid in long grass.

The following morning the Hyenas had found the kill and nothing was left and the Lions had sensibly left.

Taken in Kwando concession Northern Botswana.

    Hi Ken,
I like the detail and the story your image tells. I have yet to see my first lion kill, so am quite envious of your opportunity.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes for 2012,
    Mark.

    Mark,

In over 480 days on safari in Africa, I have only ever seen one actual kill, and that was from quite a distance, but I have seen plenty of feasts!

Lion feasting with lots of flies makes for a very good story. Lovely image Ken.

Well done, good light, good action (tongue), good angles (light and subject), good color, good view. Leg placement of both zebra and lion perfect, head also.
Some safari guides I know who are into photography will describe a"scene" by scoring 1-5 for - view (unobstructed), subject, action, light. So this scene would be communicated to other guides probably as a 5-5-5-5.
Seeing kills, pretty rare for me also, but beat you. Last Tanzania on same morning saw lion bring down a young zebra and young wildebeest. On around 60 days on safari before then have seen about 8 kills. And as you say, many "feasts".

This'll be too "gory" for some, but not for me. Great story-telling image in the best kind of light.
I like that not even the zebra's leg obstructs her face.

And to think I witnessed 3 actual lion kills in 24 nights whilst in suicide month at Sth Luangwa in Nov, Ken. Extremely fortunate indeed.

Ken - nicely composed and captured though I think the title should be "Waiter there are several flies in my steak tartare."

Thanks everybody for your comments they are much appreciated. I cannot say that we were overly lucky to find this sighting as we chose our guide "the best in Botswana" deliberately and paid both for him and a private vehicle, far better than pot luck.

    Tom,

You have been very lucky indeed, but I am not really a Lion person and really do not like to see prey taking so long to be dispatched, give me a Wild Dog kill any day "gone in 30 seconds"

    Morkel,

That leg proved to be a large nuisance as it kept moving around depending on "pull" direction, I have plenty with it in the way.
