    Ian,

This is some of your best work. The image displays a great eye, included habitat and it is original - love the different look. The exposure techs are solid and the high shutter provides sharp detail in flight. I like the subject placement and composition, feel like I am there - well done.

Thank you. I wasn't sure about the composition when I was working on it. The heron was flying into plain blue sky so my usual institinct of putting the bird on the left flying into open space wouldn't work. I left the tree on the left, but that put the bird over on the right and I didn't know how that would work out.

Hi Ian, I agree about everything except the crop. For my eye I would put the bird in the left third of the frame as it is flying out of the frame with this crop. This would mean cropping away about half of the tree and adding sky on the right. Nothing wrong with a bird flying into blue sky - that's what they do. This would also help with the feeling that the bird is past your optimal point of capture. Otherwise, nice job!

Beautifully captured Ian. I love the soft tree in the background too. Nice sharp flight shot.

Kerry, That was the first way I tried it. I just thought the image was too heavily loaded towards the left with tree and bird and just empty sky on the right. I thought about adding some tree on the right, but that didn't look so good to me either. I settled on this and realize that the heron is flying out of the frame rather than into it.

Thanks, Pat. I'll dig when I'm home and find the original.
