It's a very wet, nasty day in New York today so I decided to get a little sun by revisiting this image. Taken on Espanola Island in the Galapagos in April 2009 in the late afternoon sun.

    Canon 50D
    100-400 @ 400mm
    1/800
    f10
    ISO 400
HH, increased contrast, cropped and sharpened in CS5.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Hi Rachel, love these guys with their rather arrogant/smug expressions, some very fond memories in a fantastic location.

To me there looks to be some Red coming through, so just pull it back a tad, mainly on the seal. Not sure how blue the sea BKG was, but it would be great to get that real punchy colour. Obviously now with hindsight you didn't need to go to f/10, but hey still a good shot packed with memories for those rainy days as you say.

    How much of a crop?

Thanks Steve. Not on my calibrated monitor right now so will take a look at the color later. Not much of a crop just some off the lhs to move the sea lion off center. A lot of compression when saving for web though.

very nice contented look on the sea-lions face and the image is pretty sharp looking. Like the long sweep of the whiskers as well.
Very happy feel to the shot.

I love the expression here and this is chock full of details, nicely processed too.
Would be interesting to see it with Steve's colour tweak suggestions applied...

Rachel, just try this. Open in RAW file and change the WB to Daylight, see what happens. Will talk tomorrow.

Here's a repost following Steve's suggestion of going back to the RAW file and changing the WB to daylight (from auto). I also selectively dropped the saturation of the red channel in the sea lion -10. (Thanks Steve ).

Repost is excellent. he looks so content and happy. Are you sure you weren't rubbing his tummy? I like the comp and the neck wrinkles. One of my favorites of yours,

Hi Rachel, just goes to show, you had the image in the bag like so many recently, it just needed a little tweak.

There are others on here that are far better in Workflow & PP, but certainly I have found that once you get the WB, Colour Temp & Tint looking right all other adjustments are just 'fine' tweaks. Obviously it helps if the image is well exposed and this was and the majority of the hard work was done 'in camera'.

Personally I still feel there is just a hint of Red/Magenta coming through in the BKG, however it all comes down to personal taste, but hope this has helped you.

I think the repost rocks. Having not been there, Steve might still have a point on the colour...

Try it Morkel, you would love it, no Lions though, just turtles, sea lions, birds and reptiles.

Thanks everyone for all the kind comments. I agree that anyone who can should go to the Galapagos, a very special place. Here's one more repost quickly reducing the magenta in the bg slightly.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

    Rachel,

Last post is great. Love the expression.

For me this is a vertically framed image. I would have rotated the camera and been sure not to have clipped a whisker.
