Help with Egyptian Goose in flight
Hello All, I have always wanted to take good pictures of geese in flight, but these birds are fast, furious and unpredictable. This picture is a tight crop of a frame I recently shot. The bird itself appears better than what I have managed in the past but I know there are several issues: busy background, noisy bird, high dynamic range. I will be extremely grateful if you can give me any comments on how this can be processed (reposts much appreciated). My photoshop skills are extremely basic, so I would actually love to see what is achievable with this picture, I am therefore also posting a link to the raw fileMany thanks in advance.Canon 7D/400mm f5.6L/Handheldf7.1 1/3200 ISO320RAWFILE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/56022791/IMG_0295.CR2

Hello Vikram, and welcome to Eager To Learn! We are all here for the same purpose - to become better photographers. Please feel free to jump in and add your comments and observations to the posts of others. We are all learning from each other here.
I like your capture and nice to see yet another member of the 7D400 club. You did a great job of controlling the whites with your exposure techs and could have given another third of a stop (ISO 400 or boosted in post) with ease. Good detail and color rendition, nice sharp eye. The crop feels a bit much to me, as the bird feels cramped in the frame. Image quality has suffered a bit with the large crop, but you still have pretty good detail. The background is very busy and takes a bit from the image but not much you could do with this shooting angle. Could you have captured the bird a bit sooner, so that the tree wasn't in the bg? Look forward to more!

Hi Kerry,
Many thanks for taking the time to reply, I highly appreciate input from seasoned photographers like you.
The 7D400 combo has been a revelation to me. The autofocus on the 400 prime is light years ahead of what I was used to with the 100-400L.
I have cropped it so tight because there was another bird in the original frame that I did not want to include, but you are right, I should probably keep the crop loose and try to remove the other bird in photoshop. I'll also play with the exposure in post and see if I can bring out more details in the shadows without adding too much noise.
Kind Regards
Vikram

Vikram, well captured. Nice details on the head. I like the overall composition of this bird agree on the busy background and loss of details on the wings.

Thanks for your message. This is a nice flight shot, you got a nice wing position and a good flight angle. The image has suffered from poor post processing, not the crop. Here is what you can get from the RAW.
The BG is relatively busy hopefully you can get a better BG next time
Hope this helps

Hi Arash,
Many thanks for spending your valuable time on this. Your repost is a definite improvement. I see a sharper bird, a de-emphasized background, less noise and far more detail in the shadows. Would be very useful if you could outline what your steps to process, since I have yet to master that art :)
Kind Regards
