    Default White wagtail feeding

With the poor UK weather (drizzling, dark, overcast, you name it) continuing, I still decided to try out my new 600 F4 IS. This wagtail showed up and was looking for some worms for lunch. Shot was taken handheld with one kneel down and elbow rested on leg. I know that this image doesn't do any service to the 600 F4 IS but still wanted to go for it and use my new lens on New Year day.

Details: 7D, ISO 640, 1/80@f4, +2/3, 600mm, close to MFD, converted from RAW to JPEG using DPP, slightly cropped from left, right and top.

    Ezhil,

Happy New Year and congrats on getting that 600! I think you've missed focus on this little guy (or maybe it's some motion blur because sharpness at 1/80 sec HH with a 600 would be quite a feat). Keep on shooting!

Hi Ezhil- Good attempt but the light did not allow you the shutter speed you needed to obtain a sharp image. You might have had a chance at ISO 1600 with a tripod. Don't be afraid to up the ISO in conditions like this. A sharp, noisy image is better IMO than a blurry, clean one.

I'll mention the crop also. It's a good idea to give your subject room in the frame so that it doesn't seem like it's in a small box like here. Also give more room in the direction the subject is pointing to moving into, and more room at the top than the bottom. have a look at other posts here and in the Avian forum and get a feel for this.

The pose and head angle are good here, as is the feeding behaviour- always good to incorporate behaviour if you can.

Look forward to seeing more but you may have to wait for brighter conditions.
