Got this guy last week after an amazing day of shooting that followed a close call in the morning. My foot got caught in the muck and me in my waders went down but the gear was safe up high. I thought it would be the start of a bad and cold day but it was a really great day full of photo ops. This one was later in the aftternoon off the Courtney Cambell causeway Tampa. I spotted 3 grebes swimming together so back in the water I went and stayed for a good 2 hours of shooting them.

    Cheryl:

Excellent low shooting angle. That amazing eye, food item, flying drops and soft BG, all good.

Wish the head was a sliver more our way. Whites on top of neck perhaps just hot enough to reduce the visible detail. Can be deceiving when the feathers are wet however.

Sounds like a great day for you.

    Cheers

Wow!!!! Excellent image. Love the low shooting angle, the detail is just superb, and the food in its beak is a big plus.
    Well done.

Glad to hear that your gear and especially you made it out ok.

Tough guys to capture, and you've done it nicely. Food is a plus. Well done, and glad you survived, with dry gear.

Cheryl, great low angle...one has to go really low for these small birds...and you did it here. makes a world of difference. great pose. I think your SS fell a tad short. these motions are fast and its better to have a little higher ISO even in good light for these.

Yes I see that. The motion is faster than I thought and found out when I got home to alot of motion blur images. Thanks Kaustubh

Cheryl, you are welcome. Good light tempts us to lower the ISO...but with ducks, I dont think that is a good idea....especially if you want to freeze quick motion. 1/1600 is usually a great SS to have...but with any 'catching prey' action, it falls a tad short.
