    Avian Great Curassow

First, a very Happy New Year to all

This female was part of a pair of this large forest bird captured from boat in the Torteguero National Park, CR
I think it is uncommon to see this ever rarer bird, especially at least partially in the open.

    1/160 HH f 8 ISO 800, Ev -.33

    7D 100-400

Chose the aperture to keep focus across body as she insisted in being rear on, fortunately I think HA is good

Hope you enjoy - poss first post of this species?

    Richard:

I don't ever remember this one appearing on BPN, and a quick search through the archives showed several other species of Currasow, but no Greats.

Good choice on f/stop to get the DOF demanded by this pose. If time allows in this situation, I try to take a series with different f/stops to find the best compromise of DOF on the bird and subject isolation, all the while juggling shutter speed and ISO

Rich colors, nice look back pose, strong sense of habitat while still getting a very good view of the bird. I might consider some gentle vignetting of the LLC to help isolate the bird a bit more visually.

Best of 2012 to you as well.

    Cheers

    Randy

I love seeing images of birds I have never seen and in this case, never heard of.
Excellent look back and good call on DOF. Beautiful eye and sharp. I wish for a bit more room on the bottom for the virtual feet. well fone and TFS,
    gail
