    Default Ring Neck and Coots

My favorite ducks on Santee Lakes are the Ring Necks. There were several there today, along with many Coots. It is hard keeping the whites from blowing out and still get detail in the black. I hope the whites aren't too hot here. CC always appreciated. Also, thank you for the help regarding my settings. I think I have them figured out now. I love the 7D, but I'm not a techy person and there are so many options.

    Thanks for looking.

Nancy, great eyes here. You handled the blacks well, the whites might be a bit hot, but these are really difficult to handle and you did it well. Very nice.

    Nancy,

What is the 800 in the exif data mean. You cut the coots in half try and balance the frame, the image should have some degree of harmony. Is is alright to cut in some cases in the image it seems to draw my eye out of the frame trying to find the three. In this picture I assume the subject is the beautiful ring neck, then why include the others. Try and think in terms of, why am I taking this picture what do I want to convey to the viewer. Regarding the whites, always exposure for them first and everything else will fall into place. Look over the histogram, is there clipping on the right hand side.

The subject and background are beautiful, thanks for sharing and please show us more ring- neck pics, what a beautiful creature.

Thanks Tom. I've taken many pics of theses great ducks, but if I get the blacks with detail, I blow out the whites. It's a fine line when trying to meter. It makes for fun practice though. They are one of my favorites. Thanks for looking.

I see what you mean about the eye traveling off the image to see the rest of the Coots. I hadn't thought about that. So many times I get too concerned with trying to get the metering, I do not spend enough effort with the composition. I have many pics of the RN, which are my favorites, but most have some of the white blown out. Next time I'm going to concentrate more on metering for the whites. The 800 is the iso, which is probably part of the problem. I appreciate your suggestions.
    Thank you.
