On the day that John Chardine photographed his Military Starling, this Gentoo Penguin emerged from the water of Leopard Beach on Carcass Island, and proceeded to preen its feathers. As you can see, the bird had its work cut out, with sand on its tail and sprinkled across its back. Although I would have liked a bit more sand under its feet, I was intrigued by the graceful curve of its body as the bird set about its task.

That was a great day Norm!

Love the lines here too. The foam on the tail feathers is a bonus. Nice detail in the eye, which often gets lost in this species. For the wall I would try to add a little canvas to the bottom to give the feet a bit of room. What were your Smart sharpen techs?

    Norm,

Interesting pose and excellent techs. Agree with John on adding canvas at the bottom.

    Hi John & Sid.

I've added a bit of canvass here as you suggested. For John, I applied non-selective, overall smart sharpen, radius 0.3, amount about 125%.

The additional canvas is good. I like that you not only captured the eye but that you have some of that yellow bill. It provides a great bit of color and a place for my eye to focus on after following the graceful curves of the bird. The pale water and sand provide a great bkgd to set off the details of the penguin.

Repost is nice, adding canvas worked well. I love the geometry of the bird in this position. Very interesting image. I was thinking about maybe brightening the eye to bring some more focus there. What do you think, Norm?

    Thanks everyone.

For Lorant, I'm afraid that brightening the eye might not look entirely natural.

And for everyone, please do have a very happy, productive and healthy New Year!

Really nice Norm and the repost addresses my only nit.
