Hi, I took this image of a coot in the early morning sun and for some reason I just don't feel happy with it. Coots always seem hard to process and get the tones correct. Could anyone advise or show on how I could improve this image. The light was fantastic but I'm not sure it's flattering this subject.
Hi Simon- Could you provide the "techs" for the exposure. You have the light coming from the right which lights up the shield and leaves the tail-end dark. A reverse tone curve may would reduce the contrast. Photoshop Shadows and Highlights may do some good. Take a look at the water and you will see that the images needs a CW rotation. That's a good place to start. I like the head angle and eye contact.
Thanks John. Here's another post taking into account your suggestion. I find these difficult birds to photograph and maintain all the detail in the blacks. Here's my settings.
The photo is the next frame on from the other photo posted. I think this is a better angle and I've straightened up the bird in the frame. In terms of detail around the tail of the bird. I don't think I can recover that without introducing noise etc. Any thoughts on how to improve further would be very much appreciated as always.
Greetings. Coots are a challenge with the white beak against black feathers. Flatter light conditions can help as does not pushing the whites too far to the right.
