    Default December Theme: Birds Bathing! Magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca) Cairns Esplanade Queensland

    Canon EOS 7D Lens 400mm L USM ISO 400 F6.3 1/320 available light 13 July 2011
    While in Cairns the tides were against me so I did not get images of waders, however on the northern end of the Esplanade a drain spills fresh water onto the beach. This proved an great asset for this lazy photographer. This Magpie-lark was drinking and then decided to wade into the water ..stood still a moment then leaped into the air and then plunged head first into the water. Here it is in mid-leap. Amazing the water was only a couple of inches deep so no heed of the danger about diving into shallow water !!

    This is so sweet and funny! Strange birds they are! Lucky you got it sharp despite the slow shutter speed.
