Very difficult crop with the long tail. I do have 20% more room in front. No room below.Would appreciate your suggestions.
This was my first time pre-focusing manually then changing to AF and just firing away whenever a bee eater came in to land on the branch.
The BG is the river below the bank where to colony lived.
Is the shadow on the wing an image killer?
Comments and critiques always learned from and appreciated with thanks,

Might lighten up the under wing shadow a bit and also get rid of the branches in the lower left corner. I think the crop works fine and I am loving the beautiful color and details. Not crazy about the shadow on the head. The light seems tough , but handled well. Wouldn't throw this one out , if it were mine.

Love the bird, the landing pose, your comp. Don't love the twigs on the left nor the light quality or the light angle and the resulting shadows.

I think the birds pose works against you.
I don't know how else I would crop it, but the square doesn't really work for me.
If you had more in the surrounding area for interest, a much larger crop would work, but I take it
    you probably don't.
If you just add sky to the right, it would not do much.
I like the bird, I think it is hard to do any better.

Hi Gail, very well timed, as I know these are arent easy to get right. Lovely colours, sharp, and I would try and lighten the shadow if possible - its not an image killer. Seeing that you have more space in front, this is how I would have cropped this. Cropped from the bottom, added canvas to the RHS, removed the loose twigs hanging around doing nothing, and lightened the shadow a touch.

Love the color, head angle and sharpness. The pose makes a good crop difficult. Wish the shadow on the head wasn't there.

Great picture. Fine color on the bird. Sharp. Comp is difficult in this type of images. The dark under wings bothers me not. The shadow on the head I did not like so well.

Excellent shot, great timing and nice pose of this beautiful Bird, Gail. Nits, have been already discussed.
My only problem with the original would have been the square crop that was fixed.
    Great work.

Gail, beautiful bird with some great colors. loved the pose with that one foot still in air. difficult conditions with the light angle and raised wings....but rest everything is awesome. You must've got a few frames perched after this, I am guessing. A lookback one, possibly? with long tailed birds like these, lookback pose is the best to achieve a balanced comp.

Gail, commenting late in the thread..I agree with Stuart's repost. Forget about the would've, should've or could've feeling as this is a great capture you have nailed the just before landing !! spot on ! I am not sure that a look back pose would have happened given the bird was about to land IMHO.

Beautiful bird, Gail. Bee-eaters are one of my favorites, and this is pretty dang nice, even though it proved to be a puzzle to crop. I also think Stuart's repost looks pretty good. When in doubt, simplifying always seems to help.
