    Default The Indian Roller...taking off...

    Recently got to spend a lot of time with an Indian Roller

    Here is an attempt to capture the take off...

    D90, Sigma 120-400
    400mm, f/8, 1/640s, ISO-400, +1ev

    Riju, well timed to capture the pre-take off pose, and a good view of the chest area. I know its not always possible to predict which way they will take off, but it best to try and position yourself so that the bird will take off parallel to you. Im not familiar with your lens, but its best to zoom out to allow space for the bird to fly in space, and allow for any raised wings. Did you get te next frame of the actual take off?

    Well I captured this in landscape orientation and then cropped it in portrait orientation, because that extra space wasn't really adding much to the frame...I was firing away in burst mode, and the frame after this only has his 2 feet
    I do have a shot of the landing though...

    I really love this pose!! Very angelic with the wings pulled back like this. Nice perch and background (although I'd smooth out the circlish spot in ULC). The head looks a tad softer than the body, I'm sure this was caused by the head stretching forward and out of DOF ranger. Still a very dynamic image...lots to like!
