This is my first attempt with the new Canon 500mm f4. Weather was bright and cloud then dull - very changeable.

    Congrats on the new 500/4!!

What a cool pose Jon, the wings up landing gear down position is great. The soft BG looks good and makes the bird stand out.

The scene was contrasty and you did an okay job but the birds tail is a little cooked. You can easily fix that is PS with a new layer and a blending change or a new tail section converted darker, you dont have to change the image.
I would always recommend more shutter speed with small birds like this, for 1/500 you did a great job. Also the bill looks sharp but I would sharpen that area to make the eye better defined.
