Default Snowy and the Jumping Mouse

From a recent trip to Ottawa, Canada. Although not all my images from this trip were captured using bait this one was.

Fantastic shot - though I am a little unsure about using live bait. I fully appreciate this could be a natural scenario - but it wasn't. I am not quite at ease with making a deliberate sacrifice just for the sake of an image.
Never the less a first rate image and great exposure control.

Mike, this is really nice, love the position of the talons, the look in the eyes, and position of the bait / prey, pretty amazing.
I like the idea of the vertical and the crop also.
How much of a crop is it?

Great picture. Like the talons position and stare of the bird glue to the bait, the shadow of the prey on the snow is really nice too.

Great timing, when we were there the mouse never had a chance to jump :)

    OMG! Great image!

I would rather prefer not to sacrifice an animal for the shot, if this is the case.

Is this the full frame or a crop? i mean does the bird came too close so as to cut the wings?

I can't say I was real keen on "sacrificing" them at first either and I guess I was naive but when I booked my trip I wasn't aware this was common practice. Got over it after about the third mouse or so though.

Probably cropped half the frame. They do get extremely close at times. I tossed several hundred frames because they kept approaching too close for the 500 and only had half a bird.

Thanks everyone for your comments, suggestions and insight.

Mike you mention that you tossed several hundred frames.

does that mean that the owl was fed several hundred mice or were the mice kept from the owl at the last minute

It means that I was unaccustomed to being in let photographing in such bitter cold conditions while wearing restrictive clothing and heavy cumbersome gloves. I have tracking bif's down pretty well but was out of my element (native Floridian) so I felt like a rookie all over again and clipped way too many wings or missed focused altogether.

The wonderful and knowledgeable guide I went with was real respective of the Owls. The mice were never kept from the owls. The consensus was if they are expending their energy to go for food when it's that cold they deserve a reward.

We probably personally never tossed more then 6 or 7 to any given owl any given day. We always left each subject probably still hungry so as not to get too accustomed to a total free hand out.

Great image Mike, I love the action.

And "good for you" for feeding these (sometimes) starving animals :)
