Another day dull a ditch water and it was raining, I saw this as a challenge and I decided to give my 50D an airing along with the 100-400. I had the flash connected for some shots not for others, I think in this case it was on but it didn't actually fire so I have brightened the eye slightly in Photoshop. I applied NR to the background and did a little brushing to homogenise, there is a little NR on the black plumage only. I applied a broad Unsharp Mask to make it pop a little. I sharpened the image in three different ways and compared them and I thought this gave the best result, I await your judgement!!

Hi Jon, super pose which shows off the dreary conditions that you were both experiencing. I really like the detail that you have brought out, considering your slow ss, so which ever sharpening method you used, has worked very well. I like the colours of the BG, and since there are only two visible rain drops, I would blend them away. Comp wise, I can see this in landscape too. Bring up from the bottom to get rid of some of the OOF foliage, and add to the right where you should have more focussed foliage. Cheers.

Stu thanks for the C&C, I did consider landscape, I will have to reposition the tree and feeder, I see what you mean regarding the perch the bird is on, trouble is, it is going down because I pegged it to the feeding station and the downward inclination doesn't look too good but if it was straighter it would look fine. Agree regarding raindrops they do look a bit naff!

very nice I like the details and pose, perfect HA. A few things you may want to consider
On my screen I see a magenta cast, you may want to adjust the WB.
I do like the shots with rain but here you only got two drop trails on the ULC, not enough to have an impact so I'd clone these out.
Also the tail is lost in the pine needles, maybe by selecting the bird, putting it on a separate layer and running NR on BG you can improve the tail to BG separation a bit.

Thanks Arash - a good idea, I will also check the cast - must admit it hadn't occurred to me.

Beautiful looking bird, Jon, and like the composition, nice BG, and great texture to perch. Agree about blending drops, and checking WB. Nice one!

I would crop some off the bottom and get rid of the 2 raindrops in LUC. Lovely little bird and I can't believe that there are 3 different ways of doing sharpening on one picture!! I am still struggling with one method
