Taken this evening here in Sydney. It was a cloudy day today with short periods of nice light so I have decided to try. Got to a small wet-land with no specific target in mind when I saw a pair of these beauties. It took me about half an hour of crawling to get close enough and then the miracle happened and the sweetest light hit the area just before sunset.
I LOVE the Canon 800 f5.6 as it is light enough to allow handholding and stalking yet long enough to give a great reach. It is also very sharp, acquires focus quickly and the bokeh is fantastic as you can see - I haven't done anything to it except for a slight NR.

    About 70% of full frame

Lovely shot Ofer wich reminds me of my time down under and spending a couple of hours on these beautiful birds. Perhaps a tad more space on the right and a less centered bird would have made this one even better for me allthough i am no stranger to breaking the rule of thirds myself..

    Well done!

    greetings,

    Jeroen Stel

Beautiful, Ofer. Sweet light indeed. What a gorgeous bird, never have seen or heard of it before. Perfect low angle and perfect HA.

Hi Ofer, the IQ in this is exquisite, and that BG is amazing. Love the hint of blue of water too. Your getting down and dirty has created a cool perspective, and you have captured a good pose and HA. The bird is tack sharp, and I do like the detail and colours on him. Well captured.

I believe 'lying' is the correct english for lying on the ground, and is also spelt that way for telling a 'lie'.

A stunner. Both the image and the bird. Pointing the lens a bit to your right would have moved the bird nicely back in the frame a teench as suggested by Jeroen. Was the lens foot on the ground or were you actually hand holding?

    Thanks for your comments guys!
Artie, since I bought this lens in pristine condition I have decided to try and keep it that way as long as I can. (usually it only takes me a week to make it look ugly...) so I don't let it rest on anything but my hand. I realise that no tripod/groundpod is low enough to allow this low shooting angle so resting the lens on my hand/ground is the only way to go as much as I don't like it.

YAW and thank you. If I am understanding you correctly, for this image either your hand or your lens foot was resting on the ground. If that is the case, you are not hand holding :). It is a fine but clear distinction. Not to worry, I beat my gear up pretty well too.
