Default In Flight: Black Stilt Hybrid

    Attached Images Attached Images

Yesterday morning in a hurry to retry my fairly new Sigma 120-400 APO lens I made the unusual mistake of not checking the f number on av setting !! Not recommended.
Anyway mid morning I took a number of images of a Black Stilt hybrid including a few in flight pix.
    Here is one.
    Other Details Pentax K10D.
    ISO 400. No EV adjustment. 1/350 @ F9.5.
    Partial crop.
    Comments welcome as always.
    Cheers: Ian Mc

Hi Ian, I think we have all merrily shot away in exitement without checking previous settings. The light has let you down in this, it looks very overcast. In an ideal world, having the subject flying at least parallel to you, or slightly towards you creates a better angle. In this, the Stilt is flying away and doesnt really work. I also feel the subject is a little small in the frame. Hope that helps.

this is a good record shot from a tough to get specie but as an avian photo I'm not sure if it works. the bird is too small, soft, dark and flying away from us. better luck next time! this is a tough subject!

    Thanks Stuart & Arash
    Appreciate your critiques.
I guess that as this is a rare species I thought the markings detail would possibly override the normal strong preference for a towards photographer image so thanks for the reality check !
Yes it had started to get quite gloomy overcast at time of pictures.
These birds are hybrids of the rare Black Stilt (Himantopus novaezelandiae) and the common Pied Stilt (Himantopus himantopus).
I think this variety is called an E Node.
    Cheers: Ian Mc
