    Default Snowy Sunrise

A snowy owl in natural sunrise light. I was lucky to get out early last weekend and photograph this snowy owl during the morning sunrise. The light was at its best for only a brief moment so it was crucial I got into a good position, also being careful not to spook the owl.

The Owl looks great and nice light and BG.
I don't really like the FG, especially the left side, but would still
    Love to have this photo.

You got nice and close Jamie so good for you. Lovely light and pose. Dead on stare is great as well. FG is a bit distracting and still a lovely shot. I had a quick peak over the dyke today about mid-morning and counted about three times as many owls as photographers so a trend is going in a good direction.

Excellent shot. Love the light, great pose, and the stare is just superb. Agree on the foreground, but still a shot I would love to have.
    Well done.

Hi Jamie, exquisite light, which in turn has brought out the warm colours. The snowy is well exposed, with good eye contact. Comp wise, I would take a bit off the left, and try and clone out the iron rod below the snowy. ( I feel its separated enough ) Running a little more NR on the BG will hope too. Gotta love your snowy's Jamie.

    Beauty image, Jamie.
You guys are very lucky this year to have had so many opportunities to capture the beauty of this bird.
The early morning light, a little frost on the grass makes it special.
    Great composition as well.

    Jamie:

The light just striking the top of the bird really gives that strong sunrise feeling here.

Because of the angle of the gaze, you certainly do have some flexibility with your cropping, and I think Stuart has a good suggestion in that regard.

I would def. lower the luminosity of that brightest diagonal brown/orange twig in front of the bird.

    Cheers

Hi again Jamie, when I posted my original comment above, I was at work and didnt have access to PS. Here is my version.
Cropped a bit off the LHS and a little from the bottom.
Brushed the blur tool over the OOF parts of the BG, especially below to rid you of the undity part infront of the snowy.
Cloned out the dark piece of wood directly below the snowy. ( ok, left the snowy a touch untidy in that area )
Cleaned up along the line between the OOF part of the BG, and infocus part. ( there were a few pieces of grass sticking up, maybe could have been left alone in hindsight. )
Toned down the orange twig via linear burn at 20%

Repost addresses the issues. Just a bit of clean up where Stuart removed bit of wood or pipe in front of the owl. How I wish I lived in BC right now. I am so envious of your snowy sightings

Nice image Jamie! I like the eye contact and warm lighting. Stuarts repost brings it to a new level.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to comment

A big thank you to Stuart for the rework post. I am in photoshop at the moment reworking this image based on your feedback and want to know what settings you used on the blur tool for the FG work? I can't get my blur to look as fluid like and smooth.

The organge stick has grown on me but I totally agree that it does need toned down. I removed it completely in one edit attempt but then felt the image lacked balance.

Thank you again everyone. I really appreciate all your feedback and kind comments.

I'll repost once I finish in PS.

Hello Dave, I am glad things are cooling off a little. It got crazy for a while. I am going to head down over the holidays and try to get some different images during the cold early mornings. I have only spent about 5 hours with them in total so a lot more to learn and images to be had.

Maybe I'll see you there one day.
