Jim really loved the colors and exposure on this one...BG is superb... the bird looks in little awkward position and wish the tail was visible...is that purple color cast on beak and legs or the bird has that color shade in those parts?

Wow...what a pretty bird. You must've really enjoyed photographing this one. great colors, BG. I like the head-on pose and that slight head turn. Inky blacks are nice. A tad more DOF with higher ISO might have been ideal. But in such low light, there would have been noise in iso 640 40D file....in the dark feathers and the BG.

Thanks for the comments Sachin. In all the files I have of this Tanager the beak and feet look close to the same as this image.

It's always a tough call in low-light areas; how to balance DOF, SS, and ISO. I think you've made good choices here, although a bit more DOF would have been nice. Nice perch too. More of a profile pose would have given you a better head angle, and more of the body in focus.

Hi Jim, I dont know this species apart from all your posts you have shared with us, but I have noticed that these guys come in an array of different colours. Good head on capture, and as the tail is tucked away, Im fine with the DOF in this. Lovely well exposed colours on this guy, sharp, and I do like the curve in the perch.

Jim, its a pleasure to see this bird! What colours and what a capture! Must have been tough under the situation.
I wouldn't add to the comments as enough is there.
    Will look for the re-post.
    Thanks.

Wow!!! Beautiful bird and you captured it very well. Exposed very well, great detail, and the background is just wonderful.
    Well done.
