This buffalo had been attacked by a large croc the previous evening whilst coming down to drink,
it's front left leg has been almost severed and rear end badly mauled, (deliberately not shown) and was now waiting for the cruelties of nature to take it's course.
At times it even feebly tried to get up and walk as it bore the weight & humiliation of these mocking and pesky Red-billed Oxpeckers numbering over 50.
The blank look of despair really tugged at my emotions.

A large croc was now waiting in the wings.

    D3s 500VR 1/250s f/8 ISO800 Hippo hide, Kaingo camp, Sth Luangwa NP- Zambia Oct 2011 10% crop.

    C & C most welcome

    Cheers
    Marc

Marc, you have captured the ultimate despair very well.
Thanks for sharing. South Luangwa is THE place I'd like to visit again.

Another poignant image. A couple of suggestions:
    1. Clone out the partially visible oxpecker on bottom right
    2. Increase the contrast a tiny little bit or add a couple of points to the blacks and neutrals in selective color in CS5 to make this pop a bit more.
    Very nice image,
    Gail

    Agree 100%.
Late Oct to late Nov was when I returned there, was not prolific for birds and general game, due to the high 40+ C temps, but the predation viewing was the best I have ever witnessed...............stay tuned.

Good point on the Oxpecker, lower right, should have spotted that.
Regarding the blacks/ contrast enhancement, I have added what I thought was sufficient as this poor fellow was of an almost completely ash colour, attempting to depict it's dyeing fate and condition.

    Marc,

Great image, just wish you had not told us of the circumstances.

Oxpeckers are great, colours and contrast look fine on my monitor

Hi Marc, IQ, colour looks really good and the detail is perfect, one of your best.

Might suggest tightening up the crop, using the same proportion, working from the bottom RHC, loosing perhaps half the space on the LHS between Buff & trim?

Great image, Marc. Looks like you have a fantastic trip.

I would second more of a tight crop in this situation.

Marc - this is a very compelling image and the vacant stare enhances it. Techs and color look good to me. Good suggestions about a tighter crop as an alternative.

    Rachel
