    Taken during the wood duck workshop with Studebaker in Oct in Ohio (this is a mallard). I'm not sure at all that this works, and am posting to see what others think. I realize that fill flash would have probably made this work better. I know that the blacks lack detail and that I should definitely have stopped down to get more DOF, as the back of head not sharp. Didn't need SS that high. But I still am drawn to this, I guess more for the feeling of it (the pose, the colors and the low angle) than the details which are certainly not perfect. What do others think? Is it worth holding onto something like this? Would very much appreciate your thoughts.

    Sharpening and added canvas to top in CS5. Lightened a couple areas in Viveza.

    Thanks so much for any C and C.

    Beautiful colors, light and crop...Head looks quite soft, not nearly the IQ of your wood Ducks posted last last week. Also the blacks are blocked up, maybe try and bring out some more detail...A few tweaks and it may sing! TFS Melissa!

    This image definitely has a lot of potential Melissa. The water is lovely and the pose is great. But I have to agree with your self critique as well as Dumay's. Unless I could get the head looking sharp, I'd delete this frame if it were mine. It's one of those close-but-no-cigar images otherwise.

    Hi Melissa, super low angle, with a good preening pose with the raised wing. The BG colours really make the image stand out, and with your fast ss, and assuming you focussed around the head area, I cant understand why the head is soft. You have been posting some great work recently.

    loved the gold water and bg. the pose is also good as you have got a head visible through.
    it seem like the focus had been an issue here or the image is highly cropped. but yes it has great potential if you re-do from scratch on processing.

    Agree with your self critique. You didn't need the 1/3200 but we sometimes get excited and it's not always easy to act quickly. Regardless of the lack of IQ, this is still an amazings capture. Love the light, the softness of the water and the pose.

    I see why you like this shot. What appeals to me are the lines created by raised wing and body. You are your own excellent self critiquer ( is that a word). I agree that this one not a keeper because the head is soft. This image goes to that special place in heaven called "almost excellent except for..."

    Melissa;

    The lines, shooting angle and BG certainly drawn you in on this one, but the points you made, esp. the soft head, keep it from being a winner.

    If you can bring out some detail in the darks, sharpen the head, a winner. I would probably try a crop with the bird off center, and I can see it going either way, but my first choice would be to move it to the right. This seems counter intuitive, but the line of the wing is so strong that I think it would work.

    Cheers

    I agree with your assessment, the blacks don't bother me at all, the image is artistic, unique and appealing.
    The lack of overall sharpness really hurts a very nice concept.

    Thanks for the honest feedback, you all, I really appreciate it. It really helped to clarify this for me. And I don't think any additional sharpening, lightening, etc can improve it at this point. I'd delete it but think I may hang onto it just for personal inspiration, as I really do love the pose and warmth and overall feel of it. (I need to make a folder called Coulda Been A Contender!)
    And Stuart thank you so much for the words of encouragement, that means a lot!

    Melissa,
    Sorry I am late here in posting, Allot to like about this one, the Pose is sweet and appealing, the golden tones and light really creates a magical feel, however as pointed out the head is soft. No worries I often find my could have been files outweigh my keeper files. You have really been posting some great stuff lately I too have enjoyed viewing them. keep it up!
