    Kurt:

A big welcome to BPN, a great place to learn and grow as a nature photographer.

Interesting down the barrel pose, sharp and well exposed.

The sun was fairly high in the sky, casting a lot of the bird into shadows. Fill flash would have been your friend here to open up those shadows. With the ISO you used, probably will be able to bring up the shadows some in post, but always best to get it in the camera if you can.

To my eye, the clipped wings have lead to a rather awkward crop. Is this full frame?

Look forward to more! Please be sure to comment on other folks images, it sharpens your eye and helps build our community.

    Cheers

    Kurt:
I had a minute, and opened up the shadows a bit with Nik Color Efex Pro, detail extractor at 30% opacity beneath the wings and body. Fairly subtle, but does show a bit more underwing detail. Some noise is starting to creep in.

Fill flash is def. your friend, esp on contrasty light.

I also tinkered with the crop a bit. Although it is a bit square now, there are such strong diagonal lines that I think it works.

    Cheers

    Welcome Kurt,
Nice and sharp head shot. The light angle does not help in any way as the under wings and belly are very dark and detail less. Agree with Randy on the flash, but you could try to open up the shadows in post, although that still is sub optimal. I might actually try a tighter crop from the top and left.

welcome to BPN, this image isn't working for me for the reasons mentioned above, even if you had flash the angle was way too steep
