I took this shot in the back garden from a hide, there must have been some sunshine - I have now forgotten what that looks like!
The image is laterally inverted. A little NR on the on background and minor tweeks to brighten the eye and lores. I lowered the highlights on the lichens and slightly desaturated the red in the head of the bird and the yellow in the lichen.
    All C & C welcome.

Very nice, clean BG and lovely angle of the perch. Nice detail of the head especially in the red iridescent areas. I would have gone f9/f10 for more DOF as you had enough SS to get the bottom foot and belly in focus.

Nice classic photo of the finch Jonathan. Good detail and exposure. I also noticed the exif data and thought you could have achieved greater DoF - but also personally have lots of oof tails so who am I to talk! The perch is almost too nice for me - steals a bit of the thunder.

Hi Jon, an attractive looking finch you have here, and you have exposed the colours on his head very well. Pose looks good, as does the sharpness, and I like the lichen on the perch. Lovely smooth BG too.

Very nice comp. The OOF tail doesn't really bother me and even if you had been at F9 or F10 the tail would still have been a bitt OOF as you only get 1 cm or two extra at these focal lengths. Lovely little bird an I like the delicate perch,

Johnathan, nice shot. perch is excellent....so is the bird, BG, sharpness and light. Very well done. I am fine with the DOF. You probably kept high SS as insurance against quick movements and to capture HA. I'd have done that, I think.

Why lateral flip? I'd like to understand the rationale.

Really sharp on the head and the colors are nice.
I doubt you could have got the tail in focus, you were probably pretty close.
    It doesn't bother me.
I also don't understand the inverted comment.
    Why?

A clean image, sharp, well exposed and nicely processed. These are so different than our Finches here. The inversion comment has me confused as well.

I love the beautiful iridescense the sun gave on the finch's face. Nice simple image design. The pose is good, but I wish for less of a frontal view as I'd like to see some of the wing. I would tone down the perch even more than you did, especially the larger clump between the feet (beautiful perch though...well chosen!). DOF is fine for me too, what needs to be sharp is.

Thank you for all your C&C. Laterally inverted = horizontally flipped, I did this becasue in the west we tend to look at things from left to right and the open space would now be on the right.

    Hello Jon,

A very nice image of one of my favorite birds. I like the beautiful details and colors, great perch and clear BG. DOF is not an issue here in my opinion. This photo naturally catches my attention. Well done.

Great, clean composition. I don't think the DOF is an issue at all. If you had stopped down any, you'd lose that lovely bg. Photography is about compromise!
