    Ian:

    Always a challenge to get enough separation from the BG with small birds on the ground. I like the foot up pose, catch light, exposure on the bird.

    When possible, the lowest shooting angle that you can achieve will often help throw the BG more out of focus. Of course, if there is a lot of foreground objects, that makes them worse!

    With this image, I think you might be able to improve the apparent separation moderately by running a light gaussian blur pass on the upper BG, and try to tone down the brightness of the BG and the large bright pile of reeds in front.

    I challenge to make it look real if too heavy handed, but might be worth a spin. If nothing else, it will remind to go lower when possible.
