    Default Chinstrap in the Snow

This image was taken on Half-Moon Island in Antarctica. It's got to be my favorite species of penguins! There was light snow falling at the time and these birds were loving it.

    Linda:

I like the subdued color palette, his angle in frame, falling snow.

I would trade a little room off the top to get a bit more below the feet.

The interface along the top edge of the snow and the background has an interesting halo to it on my monitor. Is this from post processing, or present in the raw file?

I have really enjoyed the penguins!

    Cheers

Randy: That "halo" on the edge is there in the raw file but it seems to be accentuated a bit by the processing.

I've got a bit more room at the bottom but liked the looks of the water and the rocks behind to remind me of the environment they were in -- pretty harsh conditions.

    Linda:

If you aren't afraid of a slightly more square crop, just add a sliver below, and keep the environmental component you like above.

Cute as can be, nice moody image...A little flat in col and contrast...Maybe a bit more sat and contrast will make it pop a touch more! TFS Linda

What a lovely little chappy, to my mind it could do with a little more oomph.

The halo is most peculiar, but at least I can see it

Does anybody have any idea as to how this could have been caused?

Thanks everyone for your comments. For what it's worth, I like the moodiness of it as that is the way it was at the time.

I've got a bit more room at the bottom and might try a square crop to see if I like that better but I did want to get the depth with the water and rocks behind.

I've tried reprocessing this image in several ways but haven't been successful at eliminating that halo. I'm not sure why it's there but you can see it in the Raw image. The ones before and after it also have that halo. I'm thinking that the lighting might have had something to do with it since that was the edge of the snow as the terrain dropped down rather steeply from there.

Ken -- not sure if that's a compliment or not!

    Linda,

My comment on the image itself was meant to be a compliment, the additional comment on halos follows seemingly unending comments on my bird posts and was meant to be a little tongue in cheek
